I Wish

Lyrics by Cory Smith, music by Stevie Wonder (I Wish)

Tracing my ancestors,

Try to visualize my family tree

My late uncle Hector,

he knew all about our pedigree

Though he kept a journal

With lots of stuff inside

Couldn’t read his writing

Heaven knows I tried

Got up in my attic

Opened up my aunt Larissa’s trunk

Found a little scrapbook

Mixed in with all of her other junk

Mapped three generations,

Then I hit a wall

Found a bunch of photos,

Too bad that was all

I wish their names, were,

written on the back

Why aren't there dates, why

didn't she keep track

I wish that I could

Read what Hector said

Wish he had used a

Typewriter instead

But that’s how it goes

Traveled to my homeland

Hoping that I might unearth a clue

It was quite expensive

My ancestors came from Timbuktu

Searching through some records

That were pretty old

Found my great great gran-dad

Then the trail went cold

Almost gave up then I

Learned of a new research avenue

Seems there is a website

So I went online to take a view

There were my ancestors

Starring back at me

And the line went back to

1463

I wish that I had

Gone online before

I wasted time and

Then I wasted more

I wish that I had

Known about the site

But in the end it

Turned out alright
